Since June 2026, Chinese officials have been in closed door talks about restricting foreign access to the country’s most advanced AI models, both open and closed. The Ministry of Commerce is leading the discussions, China’s state planning agency is also in the mix, and the companies involved include Alibaba, ByteDance, and Zhipu. Nothing has been decided. There is no published regulation, only reported meetings and one unofficial proposal from a legal scholar roundtable, and the options range from light registration for basic tools to keeping the most capable future models domestic only.
My practical read is not that Chinese open models are about to disappear. It is that I would stop assuming every future release from Alibaba, Zhipu, or DeepSeek will keep showing up globally, immediately, with downloadable weights. If your product depends on a Chinese open model, it is worth keeping a backup provider in your back pocket and avoiding a build that only works with one model family. The earliest real signal will probably come from how the major Chinese labs actually ship their next models, not from a dramatic overnight ban.
