I am mainly interested in personalities, open source projects, topics, and companies in the world of data science, data engineering, artificial intelligence, and technology. I also host The O’Reilly Data Show podcast.
I’m currently the Chief Data Scientist at O’Reilly Media, the Program Chair of the Strata Data Conference & the O’Reilly Artificial Intelligence Conference, and of TensorFlow World. I’m also an advisor to a few exciting startups and organizations: Databricks, Alluxio, Matroid, Anodot, Determined AI, Faculty (formerly ASI Data Science), Graphistry, DeepScale, Yakit, and The Center for Data Intensive Science + Open Commons Consortium (University of Chicago). I was also previously an advisor to Lattice Data. I am interested in the practical aspects of Ethics in Technology, and along with some friends, I help curate the newsletter Ethics.dev.

I have applied Business Intelligence, Machine Learning and Statistical Analysis in a variety of domains including Financial Engineering, Direct Marketing, Consumer and Market Research, Targeted Advertising, Search Marketing, Web Analytics, and Text Mining. My background includes stints with an investment management company, internet startups, and financial services.
I’m an ex-academic: I was an Assistant Professor at U.C. Davis and was the founding Department Chair for Statistics and Mathematics at C.S.U. Monterey Bay. I was a visiting member of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley and have taught at U.C. Santa Barbara and the University of the Philippines.
