I’m currently the Chief Data Scientist at O’Reilly Media, the Program Director of both Strata+Hadoop World & the O’Reilly Artificial Intelligence Conference, and founder of Verisi Data Studio. I’m also an advisor to a few exciting startups and organizations: Databricks, Alluxio (formerly TacyhonNexus), SparkBeyond, Lattice Data, Anodot, Graphistry, the ASI, Matroid, Yakit, and The Center for Data Intensive Science + Open Commons Consortium (University of Chicago).
I have applied Business Intelligence, Machine Learning and Statistical Analysis in a variety of domains including Financial Engineering, Direct Marketing, Consumer and Market Research, Targeted Advertising, Search Marketing, Web Analytics, and Text Mining. My background includes stints with an investment management company, internet startups, and financial services.
I’m an ex-academic: I was an Assistant Professor at U.C. Davis and was the founding Department Chair for Statistics and Mathematics at C.S.U. Monterey Bay. I was a visiting member of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley and have taught at U.C. Santa Barbara and the University of the Philippines.
