This series of charts, extracted from a recent Stack Overflow Developer Survey, provides insights into developers and technologists’ attitudes and behaviors towards AI/ML tools across various professional tasks and experience levels. One central theme that stands out across the dataset is the prevalence and acceptance of AI/ML tools for writing code. Regardless of the experience level, a significant proportion of developers, reaching up to 88.10% for developers with 21+ years of experience, are currently utilizing AI/ML tools in their code writing processes. This prevalence indicates a profound trust and reliance on AI/ML tools in this specific task, hinting at AI’s essential role in modern coding workflows.
The charts also reveal an intriguing trend: while younger, less experienced developers are more likely to use AI/ML tools in their tasks, the tendency to utilize these tools decreases or flattens as experience increases. For instance, more seasoned developers, those with 21+ years of experience, show a lower likelihood to adopt AI/ML tools across various tasks, except for writing code. This discrepancy may be due to the increasing complexity of projects undertaken by more experienced developers, which might currently be beyond AI tools’ capabilities.
